Senators weigh in on Syria’s future ahead of President Trump’s meeting with Syria’s interim president
President Trump will meet with Syrian interim President Ahmed al‑Sharaa on Monday; the meeting is expected to mark al‑Sharaa’s first visit to Washington since the fall of Bashar al‑Assad in December 2024.
TV Abraham asked U.S. senators on Thursday what they’d like to see come out of the meeting, and whether they support lifting sanctions. Earlier this year, President Trump signed an executive order ending most U.S. sanctions on Syria, but the law known as the Caesar Act remains in effect, and the administration is urging Congress to repeal it.
