“A successful pluralistic democracy on Russia’s borders is a terrible advertisement for Putin’s regime.”

In this fourth part of his conversation with Jacob Heilbrunn, Christian Caryl, Columnist at Foreign Policy Magazine, reflects on Russia’s patrimonial tradition, Vladimir Putin’s imperial reflexes, and the deeper logic behind the war against Ukraine.
For Caryl, Ukraine’s resistance cannot be reduced to weapons and battlefield innovation. It is rooted in an extraordinary civic renaissance, a decentralized society, and a grassroots culture of mobilization that has allowed Ukrainians to respond, adapt and innovate with remarkable speed.
This is precisely what Putin fears most: not only Ukraine’s military strength, but the example of a flourishing, pluralistic and competitive democracy on Russia’s border — especially in a country once seen as the heartland of imperial Russia.
