In this first part of his conversation with Jacob Heilbrunn, Michael Mandelbaum, Professor Emeritus at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies and author of The American Way of Foreign Policy, explains what makes the US approach distinctive. He identifies three enduring features: the promotion of liberal ideas, the use of economic instruments to achieve political goals, and the unusually strong influence of public opinion. Together, these characteristics form what he describes as American exceptionalism in foreign policy.
